Ballarat Off-GridSolar Diagnostics and Repairs

Call us if something isn't right. We'll isolate the system fault and help you with what’s failing

Off Grid System Down or Underperforming with No Obvious Cause? We can help fast!

Not every fault announces itself. Plenty of callouts start with "it's just not making the power it used to" — no code, no alarm, nothing on the display Underperformance is a process-of-elimination job. We work through the system in the order that eliminates the most possibilities fastest. You get a written report. You'll know exacty what's failed, what's degraded but serviceable, what's fine, and what it costs to put right. If part of that work is something you can do yourself, we'll say so.

NOT SURE WHAT’S WRONG?

Tell Us What Your System Is Doing

No fault code? No problem. Tell us what’s changed, what equipment you have and any errors you're seeing. We can work out where to start.

Off Grid SolarFault Diagnostic & Monitoring

Inverter Fault Diagnostics

Fault codes don't always mean a failed inverter. We test the inverter, connections and configuration to find what's actually causing the problem.

Solar Battery Diagnostics

We test battery capacity, cell balance, BMS history and charge performance to find out why your batteries aren't holding charge.

Solar Panel Array Diagnostics

We test each string for voltage, current, shading and panel faults to find where lost solar production is coming from.

Remote Monitoring

If your system is online, we can often check fault history and performance remotely before a technician needs to come out.
Inverter Repair & Diagnostics

Inverter Faults Are the Most Common Callout, and the Most Misdiagnosed

The inverter is usually where you'll see the fault first. It's the component with the screen, so it's often assumed to be the problem. But an overload or DC over-voltage code doesn't necessarily mean the inverter has failed. The actual cause can be upstream, a battery issue, poor connection, panel fault or configuration setting that was never right from commissioning.

Remote Diagnosis Can Save You a Callout

If your inverter is connected to a monitoring platform, we can often log in remotely, check the fault history and narrow down the cause before arranging a call out. For properties further from Ballarat, that can save an unnecessary service call altogether.
Solar Battery Servicing

A Battery Problem Doesn't Always Mean You Need a New Battery

If your batteries aren't holding charge, dropping out early or behaving differently than they used to, replacement isn't the first conclusion. We check battery health, cell balance, BMS data and charging behaviour, as well as the inverter settings and connections around the battery. The aim is to find out whether the battery itself is failing or something else in the system is causing the problem.

What we test

Capacity load
Individual cell voltages
Module voltages
Battery bank balance
BMS event history
Charge acceptance
Terminal condition
Torque
Battery interconnects
Solar Panel Array

Batteries Not Holding Charge: Dead Cells or a Design Problem?

When an off-grid system isn't producing what it should, the problem can be anywhere across the array. We test individual strings and panels to isolate where production is being lost, checking voltage, current, shading, soiling and connections rather than assuming the panels themselves need replacing.

What we test

Individual strings
Panel performance
Shading changes
Soiling
String connections
Underperforming panels
Off Grid Upgrades & Expansion

Sometimes the System Hasn't Failed, You've Outgrown It

Older off-grid systems were designed around the household and technology of the time. If your energy use has genuinely increased, or ageing equipment is limiting what can sensibly be added, expanding or modernising the system may be the better long-term solution. We assess what you already have first, what can be retained, and whether an upgrade is actually justified.
For systems that are sound but outgrown, Adding capacity is often the right answer. More panels, more storage, or moving to a modular platform you can keep expanding. That's a servicing and upgrade conversation, and it's a different job to a repair.

Designed Around Future Realiability & What You Need

More occupants, electric vehicles, larger appliances or new buildings can significantly change the load an off-grid system needs to support. An expansion should solve a genuine capacity problem — not be the default answer to a fault that could have been repaired.

Production side

panel open-circuit voltage and short-circuit current per string, shading changes, soiling, and whether any panel is pulling the string down.

Charge path

charge controller or MPPT behaviour, actual charge current against expected, and whether the bank is reaching absorption at all.

Storage

Voltage under load, cell balance, BMS logs, and capacity against nameplate.

Distribution

fuses, isolators, terminals, and connections. Loose and corroded terminals cause more faults than failed components do.

Configuration

the settings. We check what the system was commissioned to do versus what it's actually doing.

Insulation and earth fault testing?

Our trusted technicians carry the test gear. If you're seeing intermittent trips or an earth fault warning, that one should be investigated by a licensed electrician as soon as possible. A safety issue, not a nuisance.

When the Fix Is a Repair, and When It's a Redesign

Some off-grid systems need a repair. Some need a component replaced. And some have reached the point where continuing to repair them is simply putting money into a system that no longer suits the property.

We look at what can be kept, what needs fixing, and whether the system still has the capacity to do the job it’s being asked to do.

Repair, Upgrade or Redesign?

It comes down to the condition and age of the equipment, whether the system can support your actual energy use, and whether it was properly sized for the property in the first place.

What a Diagnostic Assessment Actually Involves

Start with a Conversation about your Off Grid Solar needs. You receive a system design matched to your usage and site.

Before the visit

Share the symptoms & the brands. If the system has monitoring, we'll often look at the data first.

Is it safe to keep using the system while it's faulting?

Depends on the fault. Earth faults, burning smells, swollen batteries and anything involving heat at a terminal — shut it down and call us. Most other faults you can run on while we get to you, and we'll tell you which one you've got when you describe it.

Diagnostic Service Questions for Off Grid Homes

Questions We Get on the Phone

Overnight isn't when it charges — but if you mean the bank isn't lasting the night, the usual causes are lost battery capacity, a charge path that isn't getting the bank to full during the day, or a load that's increased since the system was sized. Testing tells you which one.

You can't tell from the display. A balance problem and a dead cell look identical on a state-of-charge readout. It takes a load test and cell-level voltage readings to separate them, and the fix for each is very different in cost.

Yes — that's the diagnostic assessment. Array, charge controller, batteries, inverter, wiring, configuration. You get a written report on all of it, not just the part that threw the code.

Most of our repair work is on other people's systems - All we need to know is the brands and the symptoms, we can help from there.

Most aren't. Earth faults, over-temperature, and anything with a burning smell or heat at a terminal are the exceptions — shut the system down for those. Read us the code and the brand and we'll tell you where you stand.

Yes, and it's worth doing before you're relying on it through a winter. An inherited system tells you nothing about how it was sized or whether it was ever commissioned properly.
