One prevalent issue we encounter involves older grid-connected systems, typically those installed about a decade ago, with capacities primarily in the 1.5kW, 2kW, and 5kW range. Rarely do we see systems in the 3-4kW range. The most frequent problem with these setups is inverter failure, although the solar panels and connections usually remain intact. It’s common for inverters to fail after around ten years of operation, with replacement costs being approximately $900 for a 2kW inverter and around $1400 for a 5kW inverter.

Another area of concern is with off-grid solar systems, particularly those installed more than six years ago before the advent of lithium batteries. These systems often suffer from exhausted lead-acid batteries that have lost their capacity, or from under-sized solar panel arrays. A simple solution for the latter issue is to expand the array by adding additional panels and an extra charge controller. However, if the battery is completely non-functional, a full system replacement is usually more economical than attempting repairs. This is especially true for older systems that are based on 24V, as 24V batteries are no longer readily available.
