Empowering Change: Shattering Gender Norms in the World of Renewable Energy

In a world as innovative as renewable energy, one would expect an atmosphere of progressiveness and forward-thinking. Yet, I found myself jolted by an unexpected reality that shattered my assumptions. As a participant in renewable energy forums, I recently stumbled upon a technical discussion that quickly descended into a disheartening spiral of sexist remarks and inappropriate imagery. It was a stark reminder that, as a woman, I stood among a minority, empowering change in an industry striving for progress.

The gender disparity within the renewable energy sector is hardly a revelation, particularly in technical and managerial roles. Regrettably, this pattern echoes across various industries. In OECD countries, women’s representation in the renewable energy workforce hovers around 22%, mostly concentrated in non-technical positions.

These roles, often administrative in nature, tend to be the least lucrative and farthest from decision-making spheres. A meager 5% of top managerial positions worldwide belong to women, a stark contrast to the 24% average across other industries, empowering change and striving for a more balanced future.

The potential benefits of increased gender diversity in renewables are undeniable. However, it’s not just the industry that stands to gain – women have the most to reap from its evolution.

Globally, women bear a disproportionate burden due to non-renewable energy sources. In developing nations, they endure pollution from cooking stoves and navigate studies under kerosene lamps. Even childbirth is conducted under a dim candle or mobile phone light. The shift to renewables offers a lifeline, particularly for rural communities with limited access to electricity. Enterprises like Pollinate Energy and Solar Sister are transforming lives by engaging women in renewable technologies.

As for me, I refuse to be a mere cog in the administrative machinery; I yearn to propel renewable energy technologies to their zenith. My aspiration extends further – to empower women by increasing their representation across diverse roles and providing them with clean energy solutions. Fortunately, I’m surrounded by an impassioned and proactive team, united in our mission to make a tangible impact on lives. In their company, I find my purpose and strength.
